Jane Austen Time Traveler
Why make Jane Austen a time traveler? With her wit and insight, I wonder what she’d make of our century — would the 21st century fascinate or repel her, and might she find love? She was a genius at exploring the morality and heart of her characters — their self-interest or goodness. She might find people very different in our time, or their essential strengths and frailties might be the same as in her era.
I also wonder how Jane Austen could have been so insightful about people before the invention of psychology. What happened in her life to give her great understanding?
So many juicy questions!
I did my research and discovered our knowledge of her history has big gaps. What happened in those blanked years? As a writer, I painted in some possible events. What if Jane Austen could go time traveling — to the future? Might she see her future fans and be again inspired to take up her pen? Might she find love in a way she never had?
Once my imagination gets revved up, it’s impossible to put the brakes on. I daydreamed an excursion into the future for someone I consider one of the most innovative writers. Her novels were unlike any being written in her time. As an imaginative being, Jane Austen might find a breathtakingly novel way to meet the future.
The genesis of Jane Austen Time Traveler.
My story fills in one of the blank spaces of Jane Austen’s life. It entices her to have adventures she might dream of — love, war, a new world, being a celebrity author. Would Jane Austen risk everything for love, as her heroine Marianne Dashwood did? Or would she make prudent, careful observations before committing her heart, as if the romantic heart can ever be restrained? Elinor Dashwood tried that. How well did it work? I pondered those questions as I wrote Jane Austen into a visit to the 21st centiury.
Jane Austen Time Traveler will be released on December 27, 2022.
