A Poem of Remembrance, with Birds

Solace From Small Birds
A house finch built her nest
on the garland of the front door next to ours.
This is a week when our dear Soul-friend
has just departed. We first noticed twigs
on the doormat, then sticking up
above the round of faux leaves.

Then we heard the cheeping.
Now a finch mom and pop sit on eggs
at our passageway. Coming and going,
we must be quiet under our avian blessing.
The sweet timing is not lost on us.
A solace and a benediction.
Isn’t it always the way;

as one door closes, another opens.
Blessings come and go on feathered wings,
in the loop of life returning.
For a loss, Nature’s face
smiles with a wink, love prevails
in unlikely places, reminding me
Who is looking out from the nest,
and Who, day and night, is singing.
